Common Questions
- What are wake windows for babies?
- Wake windows are the periods of time a baby can comfortably stay awake between naps. Newborns typically have wake windows of 45-60 minutes, while 12-month-olds can handle 3-4 hours. These are general ranges — individual babies vary, especially premature babies or those with special needs.
- How much sleep does a baby need by age?
- Newborns need 14-17 hours total (per National Sleep Foundation guidelines), 4-month-olds need 12-16 hours, 6-month-olds need 12-15 hours, and 1-year-olds need 11-14 hours including naps. The ranges for 4 months and up come from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
- How do I know if my baby is overtired?
- Signs of an overtired baby include fussiness, eye rubbing, yawning, arching their back, and difficulty falling asleep despite being clearly tired. Overtired babies often fight sleep harder, which is counterintuitive. Catching sleep cues within the wake window prevents this.
- When do babies drop naps?
- Most babies go from 3 naps to 2 around 7-9 months, from 2 naps to 1 around 14-18 months, and drop the last nap between ages 3-5. These transitions typically take 1-2 weeks to settle and may temporarily disrupt nighttime sleep.
