Common Questions
- How do I calculate how much formula my baby needs?
- A common guideline is about 2.5 ounces per pound of body weight per day, capping around 32 ounces. For example, a 12-pound baby might need about 30 ounces per day. Your pediatrician can recommend the right amount for your baby's specific needs.
- How long is prepared formula good for?
- General CDC guidance is that prepared formula can be kept at room temperature for up to 2 hours (less in warm environments). Once a baby starts drinking from a bottle, use it within 1 hour. Refrigerated prepared formula should be used within 24 hours. Follow the instructions on your specific formula brand.
- Can you mix breast milk and formula?
- In most cases, yes. Prepare formula with water first per package instructions, then add breast milk. Discuss with your pediatrician if your baby has any dietary sensitivities or special feeding needs.
