Common Questions

When should I go to the hospital for contractions?
A common reference point is the 5-1-1 rule: contractions every 5 minutes, lasting 1 minute each, for 1 hour. However, guidelines vary — always follow the specific instructions your provider gave you, especially for high-risk pregnancies. When in doubt, call your provider rather than waiting.
How do I tell real contractions from Braxton Hicks?
Real labor contractions tend to get progressively stronger, closer together, and don't stop with rest or position changes. Braxton Hicks are usually irregular and ease with hydration or movement. If you're unsure, call your provider — especially before 37 weeks, when any regular contractions should be reported promptly.
How do I time contractions?
Time from the start of one contraction to the start of the next — that's the frequency. Also note how long each contraction lasts from beginning to end — that's the duration. Track both numbers over at least an hour to see if there's a consistent pattern.
